Sports Betting in Macau

macau-casinosEver since gambling was legalized there, Macau has become a major world hotspot for high stakes poker games, casino gambling and yes, sport betting too. Poker is truly thriving in Macau: there's a high stakes game which is basically a perpetual fixture, in which some wealthy Chinese businessmen provide very attractive action that draws in high-profile professional players like Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, and their similar caliber peers. As far as casino gambling goes, there's no place like Macau really. Gambling tourism is flourishing and casino resorts are popping up everywhere.

Those interested in betting on sports won't be disappointed either, although the Macau sports betting scene isn't quite what it could be - will get into that shortly. Horse racing and greyhound racing is great to bet on and Macau offers plenty of both. The Macau Jockey Club (which used to be known as the Macau Trotting Club) features a wide variety of races and wagers are accepted on site, as well as off-course. Betting on horse racing may not be the most popular form of gambling elsewhere, but in Macau it's the buzz: the above said racetrack operators have thousands of employees working for them.

Greyhound racing takes place at the Canidrome and it too is extremely popular with the bettors. Players can place their wagers either at the Canidrome, or at one of the several hotels which offer off-course greyhound bets.

If you're looking for betting on sports like soccer, golf or you name it, you should know that in Macau, fixed odds sports betting is currently monopolized by Macau Slot. The fact that the company behind Macau Slot, Stanley Ho's Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau SA, has held de facto monopoly over fixed odds betting for quite a while, has discouraged everyone else to try to crack the market.

The company's license will expire in June 2012, but whether or not the government of Macau will open up the sport betting market after that date remains to be seen. The signals coming from various government channels have been mixed, and frankly not quite encouraging. The bottom line seems to be that the government will explore, analyze and research the various opportunities presented by fixed odds sports betting.

By becoming a member of a poker propping team, the road to fabulous rakeback riches (RMB) will open up, even for the average online poker player.

Gambling.com Up for Sale

The web is abuzz with the purported sale of Gambling.com, which has been listed for over a month with a reserve bid price of $9 Million, this would be less than half what Media Corp paid for the Domain back in 2006 and judging from all the hype it's probably a good value for the new owner, however it still won't beat Sex.com to hold the Domain sales record but at the end of the day it's probably worth a whole lot more.

Here's a piece from Bloomberg today, which really got this story moving on the net.

The company has asked Sedo Holding AG, which sells Internet domains, to find a seller and a reserve price of $9 million has been set; several private-equity firms and online gaming companies may be interested in buying it, including Playtech Ltd. and bet365, the newspaper said.

This would be a good time for MGM to get their checkbook out and spend some money on the online brand that could bring them to the web in a most remarkable fashion, they'd make the $10M or whatever they ended up paying, back within their first year of operation. The Gambling.com Domain sale will make allot of people wake-up to the size and strength of Internet Gambling, this is an industry that's just not going away, no-matter what the U.S. Gov does.

Happy New Year

Drove out of Rio de Janeiro yesterday, before the big crowds arrived for the New Years Eve celebration. What a crazy place Rio is, the "Marvelous City" as they call it, but it just gets too busy for both New Years Eve and the Carnival unless you like that kind of thing? Me, I'd rather watch those celebrations on TV from the comfort of my home in Sao Paulo, however tonight I'll be taking the red-eye to Miami to begin 2008 by working on a new and exciting on-line Poker project - to be announced soon.

Best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2008.
