city-center_las-vegas.jpgLAS VEGAS - An extraordinary urban resort destination brought to life by eight world-renowned architects, CityCenter offers a new era of resort experiences with an ambition to refine and redefine Las Vegas.

Conceived to bring a true center to The Strip, CityCenter is much more than a collection of resorts and residences; it's a community - a welcoming environment for people to gather, relax and enjoy. Great pedestrian corridors, dynamic public spaces, authentic richness and diversity of experiences evoke the energy of the world's most exciting places. CityCenter's public Fine Art Collection enlivens the street and engages passersby. As if in a strolling gallery, guests happen upon works by world-renowned artists such as Maya Lin or Nancy Rubins as they wander through CityCenter's walkways, hotels and residences.

A true community also has regard for its surroundings. CityCenter is one of the largest sustainable developments in existence, bringing a new level of environmental consciousness to the world-famous Strip. The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded Gold LEED® certification to ARIA, Vdara Hotel & Spa; Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas, Veer Towers and Crystals, marking the highest LEED achievement by any hotel, retail district or residential development in Las Vegas. The Harmon Hotel also is pursuing LEED® certification.

"CityCenter bridges the vitality of Las Vegas with the experiences travelers seek when they visit great cities around the world, whether London, Hong Kong or San Francisco - spectacular architecture, culturally significant art, great public spaces, sophisticated hotels, unique restaurants and incredible amenities," said Bobby Baldwin, president and CEO, CityCenter. "It is an evolutionary destination that aims to transform Las Vegas as a new symbol at its core, like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Pompidou in Paris or the SONY Center in Berlin."

Stratosphere-Hotel-Tower.jpgLas Vegas saw the passing of a legend this past weekend. Bob Stupak, also known as Mr. Las Vegas has died of leukemia at 67.

This maven was a born entrepreneur, moving to Vegas in 1971 and raising the money to buy and acre and a half of land north of Sahara Avenue at Las Vegas Boulevard, then on March 31, 1974 opened "Bob Stupak's World Famous Historic Gambling Museum" which burned down in May of the same year because of an air-conditioner catching on fire. His entire career was filled with ups and downs.

In 1979 Stupak opened Vegas World, a very creative casino known for it's promotions and customized games. This venture became a big success which reportedly grossed over $100 million per year in the mid-1980's.

Allot of publicity befell Mr. Las Vegas when he won the million dollar wager on Super Bowl XXIII and then later in the same year he won the Deuce of Seven Lowball Championship bracelet at the WSOP.

A horrific motorcycle accident broke every bone in his face and put Stupak in a comma and despite the prognosis that he wouldn't survive he made a full recovery. The thing that has probably made Stupak most famous was the development of the Stratosphere, the highest building in Las Vegas. The tower opened in late April 1996 at a cost of $550 million but was a financial disaster. Many came to see the tower, but few stopped long enough to gamble, dine or shop. The Stratosphere went bankrupt soon thereafter, was sold, and is now profitable.

Never losing his imagination for great visionary projects Stupak was planning some huge Vegas construction ideas, right up until the end. Most recently it was the purchase of the Moulin Rouge Hotel and the design of a grand hotel in the shape of the RMS Titanic but sadly both these ventures never came to be.

Bob Stupak was a respected poker player appeared in the first season of the GSN series High Stakes Poker. He also appeared at a final table during the first season of the World Poker Tour. As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceeded $865,000.

The heat is on to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which came into force in 2006. Las Vegas gaming companies are watching and preparing for their entry into this sector of their industry, as they can't afford to lose much more time and money while watching British and Global gaming companies buy-up a bigger and bigger piece of the pie. What will undoubtedly be the major factor in the mitigation of this this poorly written and difficult to enforce piece of legislation, is the loss of much needed tax dollars to Uncle Sam.

Today the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative released a statement which spells it out more clearly.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AP) -- This is a boomtown, but it is also scattered with signs of bust -- namely, homeless people. And the city is taking a hard line against them.

With mixed success in the courts and on the streets, Las Vegas has tried sweeping away their encampments, closing a park where they hang out, making it a crime to feed them, even passing a ban on sleeping within 500 feet of feces.
